Pair, aged in their 70s, suffered minor burn injuries after suspected gas explosion

A couple were left with non-life threatening injuries after a suspected gas explosion at their house in Cork city early on Saturday.

The couple, who are in their late 70s, suffered minor burn injuries in the incident on the Lower Glanmire Road on the city’s northside at around 8.45am.

The emergency services were alerted and the couple were taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital for treatment while four units of Cork City Fire Brigade attended the scene of the explosion.

Firefighters from Anglesea Street Fire Station spent around 45 minutes bringing a fire under control and making safe the terraced house.

Gardaí were also alerted and a garda technical expert has started an examination to try and establish the exact cause of the explosion which blew out windows but caused no major structural damage.
