The Dublin Port tunnel has reopened in both directions following an incident involving a tanker.

According to a Transport Infrastructure Ireland spokesman “a turbo blew on a tanker creating a lot of smoke”.

The tunnel was closed in both directions in line with safety protocols.

The spokesman said there was no fire involved, but a number of units of Dublin Fire Brigade attended at the scene to deal with the incident.

The tunnel closed shortly before 7pm and re-opened shortly before 8pm.

The safety directive requires both bores of the tunnel to close in an emergency. One side becomes the evacuation tunnel with doors linking both sides and motorists and passengers are evacuated through the second bore of the tunnel.
