Gardaí in north Galway are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an elderly woman in a house fire on Monday night.
Nora Wilson, a widow aged in her 80s, was one of several people in the bungalow at Brierfield, near Tuam, when the alarm was raised shortly after 10pm.
Mrs Wilson’s daughter, Caroline, and grandson, Ryan (19), who were living in another part of the bungalow, managed to escape and ran to a next-door neighbour, who tried to help.
Several fire brigade units from Mountbellew and Tuam attended the scene and fought the blaze.
Mrs Wilson died at the scene while her daughter and grandson were treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe.
Gardaí are conducting a technical examination at the house.
However, they said that at this stage they are not treating the fire as suspicious.
