Unitds of the fire brigade remain at the scene of a fire at a disused factory in Carlow town after a fire broke out at 4.30pm on Saturday.

The fire has now been brought under control and there are no reports of any injuries. Some units remain at the scene on Cannery road, off the N80, as a precaution.

The road was closed on Saturday evening for a time between the Dr Cullen and Athy Road roundabouts.

Because of large plumes of smoke created by the fire, people living in the immediate vicinity were asked to remain indoors and to keep windows and doors shut.
