A 21-year-old man was crushed to death in a machine accident this afternoon in Killybegs, Co Donegal.

The tragedy happened at 4pm at Seán Ward Fish Exports Ltd. Gardaí said the young man, a forklift driver, died very soon after the accident.

Locals said it happened near a machine for stripping cartons, and the worker was from the Inver area of Co Donegal, about 10 kilometres from the scene.

The Health and Safety Authority confirmed tonight that it is investigating the accident. About 30 people work at the processing plant.

Thomas Pringle, the Independent TD who lives in the town, said: “It is very unusual for a serious accident like that to happen in Killybegs. Everybody in the town is devastated. It is an awful shock and of course my sympathies go to this man’s family.”
