Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a suspected hit and run in Co Louth over the weekend.

The body of local man Keith Byrne (35) was discovered on the side of the road close to his home at Carnalogue in Louth village by a passerby around 4.40am yesterday morning.

Paramedics were called to the scene where the man was pronounced dead.

A postmortem carried out at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda yesterday found his injuries were consistent with being struck by a vehicle.

Gardaí investigating the death are treating the incident as a hit and run. They are coordinating with the PSNI, as the road is often used by cars travelling to and from Northern Ireland.

Motorists who were travelling the road between 4.15am and 4.45am yesterday are asked to contact gardaí at Ardee Garda station at 041 6853222, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any Garda station.
