Garda whistleblower John Wilson will stand in the local elections in Cavan in May.

The retired garda came to prominence in 2012 when he revealed details of penalty-point terminations that are now the subject of an official inquiry.

Mr Wilson will run as candidate in the six-seater Cavan Town-Belturbet area.

He will run as an independent and said he is not affiliated to any political party. Mr Wilson is the brother of Fianna Fáil’s Senator Diarmuid Wilson who is their director of local elections.
