Gardaí release man after questioning about death of Cork woman

Mother-of-one Amy McCarthy (22) was found dead in a derelict building last April

Gardai are to prepare a file for the DPP after releasing without charge man (26) arrested for questioning about the death of a woman(22) in Cork city centre earlier this year.

Detectives arrested the man in the Midlands at about 9am on Tuesday morning for questioning about the death of mother-of-one, Amy McCarthy from Greenmount in the city.

Ms McCarthy was found in a second floor room in a vacant office block on Sheares Street at the back of the Mercy University Hospital in Cork city by paramedics at around 7am on April 30th last.

The paramedics had been called after the emergency services were alerted by a man in the derelict office building after he tried to wake Ms McCarthy on Sunday morning but failed to rouse her.

Ms McCarthy was treated at the scene by paramedics but they were unable to resuscitate her and she was pronounced dead at the scene by a local doctor and gardaí were called.

Gardai remained tight-lipped about the cause of Ms McCarthy's death following a postmortem by Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster at Cork University Hospital.

However it emerged that gardaí were awaiting the results of certain toxicology tests on blood samples taken from Ms McCarthy before they decided what course their investigation would take.

It is understood that gardaí received the results of these toxicology tests in recent weeks and moved to arrest the 26 year old man who would have been known to Ms McCarthy.

According to one senior Garda source, investigators are satisfied following receipt of the toxicology test results on the blood samples that “violence was a contributory factor in Ms McCarthy’s death”.

The man was brought to the Bridewell Garda station .He was released at 4.30pm and a file will now be sent on the matter to the DPP.
