Kilkenomics

Now in its fourth year, Kilkenomics is bringing economists, financial analysts and media commentators to Kilkenny with a few stand-up comedians thrown into the mix. The event, which began on Thursday, includes a series of talks this weekend, including one titled "Pulling it out of our arse? Economics, statistics, predictions and lies", the panel for which includes economists Deirdre McCloskey, Karl Whelan, Liam Halligan and Brian Lucey, comedian Colm O'Regan and outspoken American broadcaster Max Keiser.

Ennis Trad Festival
Gigs and jigs are the order of the weekend in Co Clare where the 20th Ennis Trad Festival hosts traditional music, master classes, sean-nós dancing and set dancing workshops. Today's music events include a double bill of Frankie Gavin and De Danann in the Auburn Lodge, which is also the venue for a Trad Disco on the same night (one ticket admits to both events). The "session trail" continues through tomorrow, while the headline act tomorrow night will see accordion-player Peter Carbery and piper Padraig McGovern take to the stage accompanied by Brian Mooney, Séamus O'Kane and Sabina McGovern on bouzouki, bodhrán and harp.

Rugby League in Limerick
Thomond Park is special – just ask any Limerick person. Thus it seems fitting that the only Rugby League World Cup match being held outside host countries England and Wales takes place at Thomond today. It gets better: one of the teams is Ireland, taking on pre-tournament favourites Australia. Kick-off is at 8pm.
