Hundreds of vehicles caught speeding on ‘slow down day’

Nearly 500 motorists detected breaking speed limits in less than six hours

Nearly 500 vehicles have been detected speeding in the first five and a half hours of the Garda national ‘slow down’ day.

Today is national slow down day where gardaí are carrying out extra speeding checks on Irish roads.

“In the first five hours and 30 minutes of Operation Slowdown (7am to 12.30pm), in excess of 22,000 vehicles have been checked for speeding with 485 detections,” read a statement from the gardaí.

It went on to list some “notable occurrences” such as:

A vehicle travelling at 82 km/h in a 50 km/h zone R752 Ballyfree, Glenealy, Wicklow and a vehicle travelling at 127 km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N25 at Ballyadam, Carrigtwohill, Cork.

There was also a car travelling 86 km/h in a 50 km/h zone at Grange Mullingar and a vehicle doing 128 km/h on a 100km/h stretch of the N7.
