Investigation launched after prisoner dies in Maghaberry jail

PSNI involved in examining the circumstances surrounding death of the 30-year-old

The police and prison authorities in the North have launched investigations following the death of a 30-year-old prisoner at Maghaberry jail.

The Northern Ireland Prison Service said the PSNI, Coroner and Prisoner Ombudsman are involved in examining the circumstances of the death at the Co Antrim prison.

Prison Service Director General Sue McAllister said: “I extend my sympathy and that of the Northern Ireland Prison Service to the family of the prisoner who has died.

“This is a tragedy and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time.”

A statement from the Prison Service added that “while investigations are ongoing it would be inappropriate to provide any further comment”.
