The Department of Foreign Affairs is advising Irish citizens to avoid non-essential travel to Turkey following an attempted coup.
A spokesman also suggested that citizens concerned about family or friends in Turkey should contact the department rather than the Irish embassy in Ankara due to the “huge volume of calls” being dealt with.
The department said itwas monitoring the evolving situation in Ankara and Istanbul, “where a heightened security presence and some incidents of violence are reported”.
It said the situation remains “unclear” and Irish citizens considering travel to Turkey are advised to delay travel until the situation becomes clearer.
The Department of Foreign Affairs can be reached on (01)4082000.
The Irish Travel Agents Association (ITAA) chief executive Pat Dawson said they were monitoring the situation in Turkey in partnership with the DFA.
“ITAA member agents are striving to keep customers informed and facilitate anyone who needs to change their travel plans,” he said.
