A search is under way in Canada for a young Irishman who went missing while swimming with friends in British Columbia on Friday afternoon last.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have been in touch with family and friends of the missing man who has been living and working in Canada for some time.

It is understood that the 26-year-old had been diving in a river with friends around 3.30pm (local time) on Friday.

The alarm was raised when he failed to resurface.

The ongoing search is concentrated in the Beaver Creek area about 260 kilometres west of Calgary in the Canadian Rockies.

The missing man is originally from the west of Ireland.

Family members are en route to Canada to maintain a vigil as the search continues.
