A man in his 20s has died following a road crash in Co Westmeath on Friday.

Three others were taken to hospital after receiving injuries, including one who was airlifted from the scene.

The collision, involving an SUV and a car, occurred on the N4 at Ballinafid in County Westmeath at about 9.20am.

A passenger in the car was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was removed to the mortuary at Mullingar Hospital.

The driver and a second passenger in the car, both male and aged their 20s, were taken to hospital. The passenger was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where his condition is understood to be serious. The driver was taken to Mullingar Hospital for treatment of injuries not thought to be life threatening.

The driver and sole occupant of the SUV, a male in his 60s, was taken to Tullamore Hospital, also with serious injuries.

Forensic collision investigators conducted an examination of the scene and the road has since reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward and any road users with video footage, including dash cam, are asked to make it available.
