A man aged 28 has died after being seriously injured when the car he was driving collided with a truck on Thursday at 3.30pm.

The collision took place at Cooga Cross on the main Doon to Cappamore Road in Co Limerick.

The male driver was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body has been removed to the mortuary at Limerick Regional Hospital for a post mortem.

No one else was travelling in the car with him, and no one else was injured in the collision.

Gardaí in Cappamore, Co Limerick, are investigating the collision. The road was closed to traffic for forensic investigation but has now been reopened.

Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Cappamore Garda Station on 061 381202.

Up until Thursday morning, a total of 188 traffic fatalities have occurred this year, a slight increase from the 181 up until the same day in 2013, and with eight this December alone.
