A man has died and another has been injured in a crushing incident at a construction site in Midleton, Co Cork. The accident occurred shortly before 1pm on Monday at a site off the Youghal Road in the town.

Details of the accident have yet to emerge but both men are said to have incurred crush style injuries.

Colleagues tried to save both men and the emergency services were on site within minutes. Paramedics, gardaií and units of Midleton Fire Brigade assisted at the scene. However, all efforts to revive one of the men failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A second man was transferred by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries. Separate investigations are to be launched by gardai and the Health and Safety Authority.
