Man in his 80s dies as car hits tree in Co Galway

Incident occurs in afternoon at Ballydoogan on N65 Loughrea to Portumna Road

A man in his 80s died this afternoon in a road incident in Co Galway.

The man was fatally injured when the car he was driving, of which he was sole occupant, left the road and hit a tree.

The incident occurred at Ballydoogan on the N65 Loughrea to Portumna Road at about 4.10pm.

He was pronounced dead at the scene and his body taken to Portiuncula Hospital, Ballinasloe.

The stretch of the N65 involved, just past the junction with the Loughrea to Ballinasloe Road (R446), was closed pending completion of an examination by Garda forensic collision investigators, and local diversions were put in place.
