Photographer Aidan Crawley explores the landscape where his great-uncle was lost in action

Spurred on by the "Missingh presumed dead" status of his great uncle Sgt. Lawrence Crawley from the 10Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers at the Somme photographer Aidan Crawely has explored the contemporary landscape of the area. Stump Road military cememtery, Grandcourt containing 213 graves of British Irish and Commonwealth soldiers, one of over 400 such cemeteries on the Somme. Photograph: Aidan Crawley

A postcard photograph of 31 year old Sgt. Lawrence Crawley from the 10Bn Royal Dublin Fusiliers called 'the commercials'. The photograph was taken in late October or early November 1916 shortly before he was killed while his battalion were attacking German positions on 13 November 1916 - the final day of the Somme offensive. Originally from Co Louth he served as an RIC constable in Castlederg in Co.Tyrone.
