A man has been killed in Co Laois after his motorcycle collided with a car.

Gardaí in Portlaoise are investigating the incident which occurred at about 7.20pm on the old Portlaoise to Ballybrittas Road (R419) at the Heath.

The man in his late 20s suffered serious injuries and was taken to Portlaoise hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the car, a 75-year-old woman, was also taken to Portlaoise hospital with non life threatening injuries.

The road was closed to facilitate a forensic collision examination and local diversions were put in place. The road was expected to remain closed until Thursday afternoon.
