Off duty garda foils bank robbery in Louth

An off duty detective garda foiled a bank raid in Drogheda, Co Louth this afternoon.

The garda, who was unarmed, held onto one of the two raiders outside the Permanent TSB on West Street.

At around 3.45pm this afternoon, two men armed with a hand gun and a knife entered the bank where they threatened and held up staff before taking an undisclosed sum of cash.

On leaving the premises the off duty Garda approached and managed to detain one of the raiders. The second man fled the scene on a motor cycle.

The male (aged in his late 40s) was arrested at the scene and is currently being detained under Section 4 Criminal Justice Act, 1984 at Drogheda Garda Station.
