Postmortem begins on baby boy in Cork

Body of infant found in bathroom of house yesterday afternoon

Assistant State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster has begun a postmortem on the body of a newborn baby found in Cork city yesterday.

Gardaí say that they will decide on what direction their investigation into the baby boy’s death will take once they receive the results of Dr Bolster’s postmortem later today.

Gardaí were alerted by the emergency services after they were called by the emergency services to a house in the Deerpark area of the city at around 4.30pm yesterday afternoon.

Paramedics found the body of the newborn in an upstairs bathroom of the house but the infant was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

Gardaí have preserved the scene at the house where the baby’s body was found as a precautionary measure pending the outcome of the postmortem.

It is understood that the baby’s mother - an Irish woman in her 40s - was also removed by ambulance to hospital where she is continuing to receive medical treatment.
