Alarm raised by locals after man’s bicycle and fishing rod found near Abbey River

An emergency search and rescue operation is underway in Co Limerick after a local man was reported as missing near the Abbey River.

The alarm was raised after locals discovered a bicycle and fishing rod at an old pier opposite Athlunkard Boat Club on the Abbey River.

It is understood that clothes were also discovered at the scene.

The man was last seen on Tuesday evening. It is believed he may have entered the water as his whereabouts has not been accounted for since.

Search operation

Shortly after 4pm, three units of the Limerick City Fire and Rescue Service were scrambled to the scene and began a search of the area.

Rescue 115, the Shannon-based Coast Guard helicopter, is conducting overhead surveillance of the area.

Members of the Limerick Marine Search and Rescue Service are also in attendance.
