The search resumed on Tuesday morning for a man feared to have fallen into the sea off the coast of Co Clare.

The 19-year-old was last seen late on Sunday night at the rear of his seaside home at Caherush near Quilty.

The alarm was raised early on Monday morning and searches immediately mounted over a wide area between Quilty and Spanish Point.

Gardaí were initially alerted by the young man’s family and they in turn contacted the Irish Coast Guard to seek assistance.

Volunteers from the Kilkee and Doolin units of the Coast Guard resumed a sea and shoreline search at 7.30am on Tuesday. Later in the afternoon, the teams will be assisted by the Shannon-based search and rescue helicopter, Rescue 115.

The same units conducted a search on Monday. Land teams also searched the shore and coast line well into Monday evening while the Kilkee Coast Guard launched their boat to search the sea. The boat was recalled at about 3.30pm as conditions deteriorated.

Members of the public have been asked to stay away from the coastline in the area.

Kilkee Coast Guard officer in charge Martony Vaughan said: “Conditions have been very poor and quite hazardous at times. We had our boat out for a time but we had to send it back to base because it was just too dangerous.

“We would appeal to members of the public to exercise extreme caution but our best advice is to stay away from the coast line. It is just too dangerous and everything that can be done is being done,” Mr Vaughan warned.

As the search was being stood down on Monday night, teams spotted something in the water and recalled the rescue helicopter to carry out a further search.

Nothing was found and the operation was called off for the night.
