A young Cork man who was put in an induced coma after he suffered a brain injury following an assault in Sydney, Australia has travelled home to his native Cork for Christmas.
Jason Cierans (29), of Mount Nebo Avenue on the northside of Cork city, was hospitalised on August 22nd after he was attacked outside a pub at Bondi Junction.
He spent several weeks in the intensive care unit at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. His friends, relatives and neighbours fundraised for his treatment.
A celebration night was held at The Commons Inn on the northside of Cork city over the weekend to mark the return of Mr Cierans. He thanked his supporters for helping him at his time of need.
“It is great the way everyone rallied around and helped in whatever way they could. It has been a big help to me and my family. It feels great to be home. I have brilliant friends.”
Mr Cierans plans to return to Australia on January 6th for a “new year and a new beginning”.
Argentinian national
An Argentinian national remains on bail in Sydney over his alleged assault of Mr Cierans.
Adrian Martinez (30) was been charged with causing grievous bodily harm to Mr Cierans outside the Tea Gardens pub in the eastern suburb of Bondi Junction.
Another man, a 27-year-old, has been charged with affray over the incident.
Mr Cierans, who has been in Australia for six years, underwent emergency surgery after the attack.
It is believed he was punched as he crossed the road and fell to the ground, hitting his head. Doctors relieved pressure on his brain and placed him in a medically induced coma to stabilise his condition.
He is set to return to work with a construction company in the new year. Initially he will perform light duties as it will take him up to two years to make a full recovery.
