A teenager has died after being struck by a van in Co Laois early on Saturday morning.

The incident occurred about 7.30am on the N80 road at Clonsoghey, according to gardaí.

Emergency services and gardaí attended the scene of the collision, which involved a van and a male pedestrian, who was aged in his late teens.

The teenager was taken to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise, where he passed away from his injuries. A postmortem will take place at a later date.

The driver of the van was uninjured.

Forensic Collision Investigators are currently examining the scene and the road remains closed at this time.

Investigating gardaí are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

They are particularly asking any road users who were travelling on the road at the time of the incident to make camera footage available to them.
