Three people have been killed in crashes in counties Limerick, Monaghan and Mayo.

A young man (18) was fatally injured this evening when the car he was driving left the road and hit a wall at Tarmon, Blacksod in Co Mayo. The incident occurred at about 5.40pm.

Another man travelling in the vehicle was airlifted to Mayo General Hospital but his injuries were not said to be life threatening.

A forensic examination is being carried out at the scene and the road is unlikely to reopen until tomorrow morning.

A motorcyclist was fatally injured in a collision in Co Monaghan this afternoon.

The crash, which also involved a 4x4, occurred on the N2 at Broomfield in Castleblayney at 1.30pm.

The motorcyclist, a man in his 40s, was pronounced dead at scene. His body was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda, Co Louth.

Earlier, a female cyclist was killed in Co Limerick in an incident involving an articulated truck.

The collision happened outside the Hunt Museum at the junction of Rutland Street, Fr Matthew Bridge and Charlottes Quay at about 7.30am.

The woman, who was in her 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene and her body was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Limerick for a postmortem.

The driver of the truck was not seriously injured but was treated by attending paramedics for shock.
