Three hospitalised after prison van crashes en route to Galway

An investigation is underway as incident involved a state vehicle

Two gardaí and a prisoner were brought to Galway University hospital after a single-vehicle crash on the M6 near Athenry at about 11.20am today.

It is believed a tyre blowout caused the van to overturn around three km east of the Athenry exit. The crash is under investigation as the van involved was a State vehicle.

The female prisoner was being transferred from Dublin to Galway for a sitting at the District Court.

A section of the road was closed for a period after the crash, but re-opened at around 1pm.
