Tributes follow death of former Irish Press journalist Willie Collins

A ‘newspaperman to his core’ who I was ‘very, very fond of’ – ex-Sunday Press editor

Willie Collins’s funeral will take place on Monday at 10am in the Church of St Laurence O’Toole, Kilmacud, Co Dublin

The death has occurred of Willie Collins, a long-time senior journalist with the Irish Press Group and the father of two renowned journalists, Stephen Collins, political editor of The Irish Times, and Liam Collins of the Sunday Independent.

Willie Collins was an assistant editor in the Sunday Press and was in charge of the design of the newspaper, supervising the layout of each page and overseeing the newspaper on to the press each Saturday night.

He was remembered fondly on Friday night by former Sunday Press editor Michael Keane who said he was "a newspaperman to his core; unflappable under pressure, a thorough professional, genial and courteous. I was very, very fond of him."

Collins, who was from Limerick and a great fan of hurling, would have been 90 tomorrow.
