Tullamore credit union is to write to over 3,500 customers in the coming days after some of their personal details were exposed publicly online.

The Data Protection Commissioner’s office has been informed of the incident and said it understood the number of individuals affected was 3,577.

It is believed details such as borrowing amounts, loan durations and arrears information were viewable on the credit union’s website for at least two days recently.

The database also included names and ages and reasons for borrowing.

Data Protection Commissioner Billy Hawkes received a preliminary report from the credit union on the matter before Christmas.

It is understood his office is examining whether a glitch in the credit union’s IT system resulted in the internal document being made available online.

The credit union did not respond to requests for comment.
