Two boys have drowned in separate incidents in Dublin and Cavan.
A five-year-old boy died after falling into a pond in west Dublin yesterday morning.
The incident occurred in a park in the Belgree Lawns area of Tyrrelstown. The boy had been noted as missing earlier in the morning and was found in the man-made pond a short time later after being seen by a passerby.
Dublin Fire Brigade said it was notified of the incident at about 10.25am and that an ambulance and fire tender were sent to the scene.
Attempts were made to resuscitate the boy but he was pronounced dead at Temple Street Children’s Hospital at about 11.20pm.
Gardaí are treating the death as “a tragic accident”.
It is the second drowning incident in the Dublin 15 area in the past 10 days.
Ricky Osagie (13) died less than two weeks ago after coming to the aid of two teenage girls who got into difficulties in a pond at Waterville Hall, near James Connolly Memorial Hospital in Blanchardstown.
He was a talented footballer who played for Corduff Football Club and had been chosen for the FAI Emerging Talent Programme.
Fianna Fáil councillor David McGuinness, who represents the area, said the incident had shocked the community. He said that to having two young people drown in the area in such a short space of time was “tragic”.
“Everybody in [THE AREA ]is distraught,” he said.
Meanwhile, the body of a teenage boy was recovered from a lake in Co Cavan yesterday afternoon.
The 16-year-old drowned after getting into difficulties while swimming with friends in Killykeen Forest Park.
The Garda Sub Aqua unit was called in to help in the search after he went missing.
His body was removed to Cavan General Hospital where he was pronounced dead. A postmortem is due to be carried out today.
