The 62-year-old pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene and his body has been removed to the mortuary at St James’s Hospital.

The man who was driving the car (58) was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

Gardaí have carried out a forensic examination of the scene and the road has since reopened.

Separately, gardaí are appealing for witnesses to a fatal collision between two cars which claimed the life of a teenager in Whitegate near Midleton in Co Cork last evening.

The driver (19) of one car, who is from the Whitegate area, was fatally injured in the crash which happened at Refinery Road at Corkbeg.

The emergency services were alerted but the teenager was pronounced dead at the scene and his body removed to Cork University Hospital for a post-mortem today.

The driver of the other car, a 21-year-old man also from the Whitegate area, received non-life threatening injuries and was taken to Cork University Hospital for treatment.

The road was closed yesterday evening to allow a garda forensic crash investigator examine the scene of the collision and try to establish the cause of the crash.

Both cars were removed from the scene to allow a garda PSV inspector carry out a technical examination to establish if they were in good working order before the crash.

The death of the teenager, which has shocked the local community in Whitegate, brings to 16 the number of people killed in road traffic collisions in Cork so far this year.
