A man in his 80s and a woman in her 40s have been killed following a head on collision in Co Tipperary.

The two car collision happened at 7.15am on the main N24 Limerick to Waterford road, close to Limerick Junction in Ballykisteen, Co Tipperary.

It’s understood both vehicles were travelling in opposite directions when the fatal collision occurred.

The victims — who were the sole occupants of their vehicles — are from the Tipperary town area.

Their bodies have been removed from the scene to University Hospital Limerick, where post mortems will be carried out.

Emergency services remain at the scene of the double fatality on the N24 Limerick to Waterford Road.

The N24 remains closed until further notice as gardaí­carry out a forensic collision investigation.

Major traffic diversions are in place through Doon and Cullen..
