Emergency services this morning responded to a suspected gas cylinder explosion at a cafe in Ballinspittle, Co Cork.

A man and woman were brought to Cork University Hospital shortly after 11am where they were treated for minor injuries.

Kinsale Fire Brigade and two ambulances attended the scene.

The man incurred burn injuries to his torso and face.

Substantial damages were caused to the cafe at the centre of the small explosion. A full safety check was carried out by members of the fire brigade this morning.

The village was sealed off for a period and traffic was diverted.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Gardaí have described it as a “minor explosion.”

A full garda investigation will now be carried out in to the cause of the explosion.

The Health and Safety Authority will also investigate the incident.
