‘Irish Times’ legal affairs correspondent Colm Keena and columnist Fintan O’Toole have been shortlisted for awards at the 2016 European Press Prize.O’Toole was shortlisted for the Commentary Award for his work on the same-sex marriage referendum, while Keena features in the Investigative Journalism category for his work on the Swiss Leaks controversy.

‘The Irish Times’ is the only Irish media organisation to feature in the awards.

The Swiss Leaks project was based on a trove of almost 60,000 leaked files that provided details on more than 100,000 HSBC clients and their bank accounts. The leak exposed how HSBC’s Swiss banking arm helped wealthy customers avoid taxes and conceal millions of dollars of assets. The bank was also found to be advising clients on how to circumvent domestic tax authorities.
