Two people have died following car crashes in counties Cork and Sligo.

A woman (35) was killed in a two vehicle crash at O’Leary’s Cross near Rathcormac in Co Cork on Wednesday morning.

The incident, involving two 4x4s, occured during a period of dense fog at about 8.50am.

The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. A man who was travelling in the other vehicle was taken to Cork University Hospital where he is being treated for serious injuries.

The road was closed on Wednesday morning while a forensic collision investigation took place. Local diversions were in place.

Separately, a man in his 80s has died following a car crash in Co Sligo.

The incident occurred on St Patrick's Day at Lufnadeffa, Ballysadare at about 12.20pm.

The deceased was a passenger in a car which was involved in a collision with a van. A postmortem is expected to carried out on his body on Wednesday, gardaí said.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 80s, and the driver of the van, a man in his 50s, were taken to Sligo Regional Hospital. Both were said to have been seriously injured.
