Two-year-old boy dies after choking on piece of toast

The toddler from Milford in Co Donegal will be buried on Wednesday

A two-year-old boy who died when he choked on a piece of toast will be laid to rest on Wednesday.

Ricky McGinley died after the incident in Milford, Co Donegal, on Saturday morning.

The boy, who only recently turned two, was being cared for at the home of a close relative when it happened.

He was immediately taken to the local health centre but then brought to Letterkenny University Hospital.

Despite attempts to resuscitate him, he passed away a short time later.

The death is not being investigated by gardaí and has been described as a “complete accident”.

His parents Gerard McGinley and Ceara Devine were being comforted by family and friends.

Local priest Fr Adrian Gavigan said everyone was devastated and bewildered.

“A terrible tragedy has fallen on the parish and the whole community,” he said. “They are just devastated and all of the community has been gripped. They are surrounded by a big family and their friends, and they are supporting them the best way they can.

“It is like a nightmare that we would like to awaken out of but unfortunately it is so real and so sad.”
