A mother and child were found unharmed last night hours after an urgent Child Rescue Ireland (CRI) was issued when a three-year-old girl disappeared from her Co Cavan home in the company of her mother.

The alarm was raised yesterday evening after Saoirse Carr and her mother, Rachel McDonald Carr (45), went missing from their home in Holburn Hill in Belturbet at 12.30pm.

Within two hours the CRI had been cancelled after the mother and daughter were found “safe and well”. Gardaí expressed their thanks to the public and media for their assistance in tracking the pair but gave no further details.

It was only the third time a CRI was issued since the system for tracing children believed to be at serious risk was introduced less than two years ago.

A CRI was issued last November when a woman and her three children went missing from their Roscommon home. The family was located safe and well by an off-duty member of the Police Service of Northern Ireland in the Enniskillen area hours later.

Last July, the first CRI was issued after Sanjeev Chada and his sons Eoghan and Ruairí were reported missing from their Carlow home. Both children were subsequently found dead outside Westport and their father is awaiting trial.

A CRI can only be issued if a child is under the age of 18 years and there is a reasonable belief that they have been abducted.
