Witnesses sought after man fatally injured in north Cork crash

Gardaí investigating a fatal crash outside Mallow are trying to establish the identity of a driver killed in the two vehicle collision.

Officers are trying establish if the rental car involved in the collision may have been hired by a Scottish national in his mid 30s as they work to identify the deceased.

The collision happened just before 7am when a rented Opel Astra headinng north on the N20 from Mallow towards Limerick was in collision with An Post truck travelling south.

The collision happened near Newtwopothouse and both paramedics and members of the Cork County Fire Service attended at the scene.

The driver of the car suffered serious injuries in the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by a local GP and his body was removed to Cork University Hospital for a postmortem.

The driver of the truck was treated at the scene for shock.

Gardaí closed the road and put diversions in place for several hours to allow a forensic crash investigator examine the scene. It has since re-opened..

Gardai in Mallow have appealed to anyone who may have been travelling the road at about 7am and witnessed the collision to contact them at Mallow Garda station on 022-31450.

The fatal crash, the second in the Cork North Division in the space of three days, follows the death of an 18-year-old motorist near Midleton in the early hours of Saturday morning.

It is the fifth death on the roads in the division in the space of 28 days following the deaths of three motorcyclists in separate collisions in Dromahane, Ballyclough and Killeagh.
