An 89-year old woman was killed on Wednesday after she was hit by a 4x4 vehicle in the carpark of a Limerick bank in Castletroy, on the main Limerick to Dublin Road, shortly after 10am.
Gardaí and emergency services rushed to the scene. Garda accident investigators launched an investigation immediately. The bank was closed.
The victim was named locally as retired post mistress Maura O’Brien, from Milford Grange, Castletroy. She had been brought to the bank by her grandson.
Gardaí are to talk to the driver of the 4x4, who was accompanied by his son, about the circumstances surrounding the incident. They will study CCTV at the scene.
The incident is being treated as a tragic accident. The man’s son was still being treated in hospital last night for shock.
It is believed that the jeep may have reversed into the woman as she was walking behind it.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, emergency services cut a woman from a car which was involved in a minor road collision at Singland Cross Junction in Limerick.
The woman is not believed to have been seriously injured.
