A woman has died this morning after the car she was travelling in collided with a truck in Co Meath.

Gardaí are investigating the incident which occurred at 6am on the Duleek to Drogheda road in Ashbourne.

There were two women and two men in the car. One of the women was pronounced dead at the scene. The other woman is in a serious condition.

The two men sustained injuries but they were described by gardaí as non life threatening.

The truck was being driven by a man who was uninjured in the collision.

All injured parties have been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

Gardaí are still attempting to confirm the ages of those involved in the collision.

The road remains closed for a forensic collision examination and diversions are in place.

The fatality brings the number of deaths on Irish roads since the turn of the year to six following the deaths of four young women near Athy on Tuesday, and the death of a 33-year-old woman in Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, in the early hours of New Year’s Day.

There was a three per cent increase in the number of deaths on the roads last year, with a total of 196 people losing their lives compared to 190 in 2013.
