Gardaí have ruled out foul play in the death of a soldier at Sarsfield Barracks in Limerick.
The 23-year old from Cork, stationed with the 12th Limerick battalion, was found unconscious in his bed at the barracks, located on Edward Street, around 1.20pm on Thursday.
He was transferred to University Hospital Limerick by ambulance, but was pronounced dead a short time later.
According to reports, the soldier had only recently completed his two-star training course.
A spokeswoman for the Defence Forces said the army was liaising with the family of the deceased, and that he would be laid to rest with full military honours.
The spokeswoman said: “The soldier fell ill during the unit’s organised recreational physical training that morning, and was found in an unresponsive state by his colleagues a short time later.
“The unit’s medics were called on-scene and administered CPR, he was then transferred to University Hospital Limerick. Despite the best efforts of the Defence Forces Medics and hospital staff he passed away”, she added.
One source in the Limerick Barracks said soldiers and staff were taken by complete surprise by the 23 year olds death and have no indication of the cause of his sudden illness.
It is believed more will be known following the coroner’s report into the young man’s death.
