Irish aid workers evacuated from Afghanistan

Irish aid organisation Concern is to evacuate its team of six aid workers from Afghanistan.

Irish aid organisation Concern is to evacuate its team of six aid workers from Afghanistan.

Concern said the evacuation was a "precautionary measure", and is to review the situation once the team has arrived in Islamabad in Pakistan.

Yesterday the UN announced it was withdrawing its staff from the country.

One of the Concern team members left for Islamabad yesterday, while the remaining five were due to leave today.

A spokeswoman for Trocaire said they were involved in to co-funded projects in Afghanistan. She said two workers had left for Pakistan as a precaution.
