Ireland's leading amateur golfers made a slow start to the World Amateur Championships which got under way in Kuala Lumpur today.

Athlone's Colm Moriarty, Birr's Justin Kehoe and Noel Fox from Portmarnock make up the Irish team who are mid-table in a tie for 28th place after the first round with an aggregate score of seven-over.

Moriarty was Ireland's best scorer with his two-over 74. The amateurs play one round on each of the four days with the best two scores counting each day towards the total.

This is the first time that Ireland has competed as a separate entity, having previously competed as part of a joint Great Britain and Ireland team.
