Boxing:Irish light-heavyweight amateur Ken Egan secured at least a bronze medal at the European Union Championships, as he and his team made it five wins from five in Odense, Denmark, this evening.

Egan beat Swede Eric Skoglund 10-6 in his quarter-final in Odense, while John Joe Nevin, Phillip Sutcliffe, David Oliver Joyce and Darren O’Neill were also victorious.

Nevin is into the quarter-finals, where he will meet English European bantamweight champion Luke Campbell in the 54Kg, after his emphatic 13-1 rout of Poland’s Mateusz Mazik, the fighter he beat in last year’s final.

Sutcliffe stopped Steven Sharoudi of Scotland in round two, while defending featherweight champion Joyce beat Denis Ceylan of Denmark 11-8.

The St Michael’s Athy man, who forced Ceylan into a standing count in the third, will meet England’s Ian Weaver in today’s quarter finals.

O’Neill’s Turkish opponent Ulus Kaya retired in round two after standing count following a left hook from the Kilkenny boxer.
