A 14-year-old Irish boy died today after he was buried under wet sand while digging a hole at Noosa Beach, a popular Australia seaside resort.

The boy's mother appealed to bystanders who dug desperately in the spot where he was last seen, said police. It took almost 30 minutes to uncover his body.

Ambulance officers arrived but were unable to revive the boy, who was pronounced dead on the scene.

A spokesman at the Department of Foreign Affairs said the name of the boy would not be disclosed before his family had been informed of the accident.
