Two Irish brothers were arrested in France after police said they had found cocaine with an estimated street value of euro11 million, it emerged tonight.

Mr Roger and Mr Michael Bergin, from Co Longford, were detained by French police more than 10 days ago in connection with the haul.

The Irish Embassy in Paris has been providing them with assistance since their arrest, a spokesman for the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed.

The men - with addresses in Longford town and Lanesborough - were being held in custody in Perpignan.

They were waiting to hear whether charges would be brought against them by the French authorities.
