Two bus loads of Irish citizens have crossed the border to Syria from Lebanon as part of a Government-organised evacuation from the region.

A Department of Foreign Affairs spokesperson confirmed that 88 Irish citizens have availed of the opportunity to be repatriated and that the convoy has now crossed the border into Syria.

They are currently travelling overland to the Syrian capital Damascus. The Department has sent staff to Damascus to prepare a welcome centre for the evacuees.

"I am relieved that the convoy with Irish citizens has arrived safely in Syria," said Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern. "Our officials are putting in place arrangements for the individuals and the families to return to Ireland.

"I would like to thank all those involved in the operation for their speedy and careful response."

It is expected that they will be flown to Dubai overnight and will then be flown on to Dublin, possibly on a scheduled Aer Lingus flight, although the Department would not confirm this.

As conflict in the region escalated, the Government has advised all Irish residents and tourists to leave.

Around 15 citizens were flown from Lebanon to Syria yesterday, with six continuing on to Cyprus along with other European citizens.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has urged anyone with concerns over a family member living or working in the area to contact them. Concerned residents can call the Department of Foreign Affairs on 1800 242 548.
