It has been reported that an Irish couple are among five people who died in a crash on a motorway in Wales earlier today.

Five people died in the crash in the early hours of this morning on the M4 in Wales, the ambulance service said.

A number of reports said the couple killed in one of the two cars involved were originally from Co Mayo but had been living in England. The reports said they had just disembarked the Rosslare to Fishguard ferry after travelling to Ireland to visit family. This could not immediately be confirmed, however.

Three youths who were travelling in one car with an 18-year-old man, and a couple who were in another vehicle, died at the scene of the collision.

It was reported by the BBC news website that the car in which the young men were travelling had earlier been pursued by police.

The 18-year-old was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital with multiple limb fractures.

The two-car crash happened on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 25A and 25 near Newport at around 3.15am.

The motorway was closed in both directions between junctions 24 and 28 following the accident.
