Prof Anne Buttimer, chair of the Department of Geography, University College Dublin, has been elected vice president of the International Geographical Union at the 28th International Geographical Congress at The Hague. Prof Buttimer is the first Irish geographer to achieve this distinction.

Before her appointment at UCD, Prof Buttimer held professorial positions at Clark University, US; the University of Lund, Sweden; the University of Paris, France, and the University of Ottawa, Canada. She is a graduate of University College Cork and received her PhD at the University of Washington.
