The chief executive of the Irish Family Planning Association, Ms Catherine Heaney, has resigned her post after 14 months.

Yesterday Ms Heaney said during the 14 months, the association had gone through a difficult and challenging time and there was now a review taking place.

Ms Heaney said she had highlighted a whole range of areas to the board and made recommendations.

"It is now time for me to leave and pursue other things. I'd just like to get on with my own career. I'm considering a few options," she said.

She said she would remain committed to pursuing sexual and reproductive rights.

Mr Niall Behan, chairman, said the Board regretted Ms Heaney's resignation. "We've asked Catherine to stay, but she's decided that she can make a better impact somewhere else. She's made a significant contribution to the organisation in the 14 months as chief executive," he said. The association had some difficulties and it had instigated a review of the organisation by consultants. He expected that there would be changes in the management's structure, he said.

"Our hope was that Catherine could have implemented the recommendations. We're expecting the review in a couple of weeks," he said.
